Repository Commit HistoryIntroductionFull Bio SketchMr. Lee received the B.S degree in Electronics Engineering at Dong-A University, Busan, Korea in 2009 and M.S degree in Electronics Engineering at Kyungpook National University, Daegu, Korea in 2011. His research interests include analog ICs, ASIC design and analysis. His current fields of interest is development and implementation of LiDAR sensor. Mr. Lee was a research engineer at GITC (Gyeongbuk of IT Convergence Industry Technology) from 2015 to 2018, and have worked on signal processing and circuit design for various sensors included LiDAR sensor. Since 2018, he is now a senior researcher in CARNAVICOM Co., Ltd., and working on circuit design of LiDAR sensor. Research TopicLight detection and ranging sensors help autonomous vehicles detect the surrounding environment and the exact distance to an object's position. Conventional LiDAR sensors require a certain amount of a power because they detect objects by transmitting lasers at a regular interval according to a resolution. Constant power consumption from running multiple LiDAR sensors is detrimental to autonomous and electric vehicles using battery power. In this paper, we propose an algorithm that improves the inefficient power consumption during the constant operation of conventional LiDAR sensors. LiDAR sensors with the applied algorithm efficiently reduce power consumption in two ways: (a) controlling the resolution to vary the laser transmission period of a laser diode depending on the vehicle's speed and (b) reducing the static power consumption using the sleep mode, depending on the surrounding environment. The proposed LiDAR sensor with the resolution control algorithm reduces the power consumption of the laser diode by 6.92% to 32.43% depending on the vehicle's speed, compared to the maximum number of laser transmissions. The sleep mode with a surrounding environment-sensing algorithm reduces power consumption by 60.97%. The proposed LiDAR sensor has a risk factor for 4-cycles that does not detect an object in sleep mode, but we are considered to be negligible because it immediately switches to active mode when a change in surrounding conditions occurs. The proposed LiDAR sensor was tested on a commercial processor chip with the algorithm controlling the resolution according to the speed and surrounding environment of the vehicle. In addition, an integrated processor that reduces the power consumption using an adaptive power mode controller with on-chip code was designed using the Global Foundries 55-nm CMOS process. Embedded systems are being applied to various industrial fields as the IT industry develops. Due to the expansion of applied industrial fields, high-precision and high-specification embedded systems are required and the complexity of embedded software is also increasing. As a result, the system malfunctions due to software errors, resulting in accidents such as airplane crashes and sudden car acceleration, resulting in a lot of human and material damage. Therefore, measures are needed to ensure safety and stability against the increasing number of malfunctions in embedded systems. This paper proposes a system (MES) that monitors the operation of a target embedded system (TES) in real-time and compares the current/voltage data of TES using an extracted normal operating current/voltage pattern. Normal operation patterns are automatically created and forcibly exposed to compare them with the operation data of TES. We propose ways to efficiently recover malfunctions by applying algorithms that can immediately detect and recover malfunctions in TES. The proposed system applies two algorithms: (a) If a malfunction is detected by monitoring the current of TES, MES resets TES to restore normal operation and is controlled using an algorithm that stops the TES if malfunctions continue to occur. (b) If a voltage drop occurs by monitoring the voltage of TES, MES is controlled by an algorithm that immediately stops the operation of TES to minimize damage to TES. Through experiments, an error detection rate of 20% was applied to normal TES that consumes a maximum of 95 mA, and if more than 114 mA is consumed, TES is reset. And it was confirmed that TES was stopped when the third malfunction was detected. In addition, when the normal operating voltage is about 5 V, an algorithm that detects the malfunction and stops the operation of TES when the operating voltage of TES drops below 4.3 V was verified.
